# Proper Diet for Cats: A Guide by Yuri Tiutchenko, Ph.D. Hello, dear friends! I am Yuri Tiutchenko, Ph.D. in veterinary sciences. In this video podcast, we will consider how to properly compose a diet for cats using only natural products. Proper and balanced natural feeding is very important for cats, and natural products are probably more important for them than for dogs. ## The Obligate Predator The cat is an obligate predator, which means that it is a true predator and cannot live long without animal products. While dogs are also considered predators, they have adapted to the human diet over more than 15,000 years of living alongside people. Dogs require a diet that includes more cereals and fiber, and less protein compared to cats. Cats, on the other hand, have retained their predatory nature and are much less amenable to domestication. If released into the wild, a cat will not disappear as long as it has its own forage base. Their hunting instincts are excellent, and they are physiologically more similar to wild felines than dogs are to wolves. ## Meat: The Foundation of a Cat's Diet The basis of a cat's diet should be **meat**—meat and again meat. I emphasize that it should be **raw meat**. The effects of meat on cats are miraculous. When I hold a piece of fresh meat in my hands, my cat transforms with lightning speed—her mood, mobility, and even the shine of her fur coat change dramatically. This is a clear indication of how a cat's metabolism is activated. In fact, these reactions are similar to those that occur during a hunt, resulting in a colossal surge of energy that can only be provided by animal-origin food. Therefore, meat should constitute **up to 70%** of a cat's diet. While a cat can survive on a meat-only diet, its life expectancy may be shorter due to potential health issues like urolithiasis and chronic kidney disease. ## Components of a Healthy Cat Diet ### 1. **Meat and Fish** - The primary source of protein. ### 2. **Dairy Products and Eggs** - Essential for good nutrition. ### 3. **Fats** - Both animal and vegetable fats are necessary. ### 4. **Fiber** - Needed for normal digestion, obtained from cereals and vegetables. ### 5. **Vegetables** - Can be served both stewed and fresh. ### 6. **Caloric Needs** - An adult cat needs about **300 kcal** per day, with specific protein, carbohydrate, and fat requirements. ## Feeding Frequency In nature, a cat feeds mainly on mice and small rodents, catching about **10-12 mice per day**. Ideally, cats should be fed multiple times a day, but in practice, they are often fed a couple of times daily. Owners may feed their cats before leaving for work or after returning home. ### Dry Food Considerations Producers of dry food recommend free access to food, but owners often overestimate the amount, leading to excess weight in cats. ## Nutritional Deficiencies Cats do not assimilate vitamins from plant foods, so it is crucial to remember that vitamins A, B, and D are absorbed only from animal feed. Taurine, an essential amino acid for cats, is also found primarily in animal products. ## Drawing Up the Diet To summarize, an adult cat requires: - **300 kcal** per day - **6.3 g** of protein per kg of weight - **3.1 g** of carbohydrates per kg of weight - **2.25 g** of fats per kg of weight Meat should make up **60-70%** of the diet, and it is best to provide a variety of meats, including by-products like liver and kidneys. ### By-Products and Fish By-products can replace 25-30% of the meat in the diet, and fish can be given twice a week, ensuring it does not exceed 10-15% of the total calorie intake. ### Vegetables and Cereals Vegetables should not exceed **8-10%** of the total calorie intake, and cereals should be given in the same proportions. ## Conclusion With balanced feeding using natural products, vitamin and mineral supplements may not be necessary, but consulting a veterinarian is advisable. That's all for the basic approaches to formulating an optimal diet for your cat. In future video podcasts, we will explore the role and value of all components of a natural cat diet. **Wishing you and your pets all the best!** Subscribe to our channel, and see you soon!
