Hello, dear friends! With you, I am Iurii Tiutchenko, Ph.D. in veterinary sciences. In this video podcast, we will consider why cats often have problems when feeding them dry food, and how to minimize them. Probably, all cat owners understand that **proper nutrition** of a cat is the basis of health and, of course, a high life expectancy. Many people think that natural feeding is much better than dry food. I would argue, but, alas, I cannot. Well, of course, natural balanced feeding is much better than dry food. And if you have the opportunity to feed your pet with natural food, then, of course, do it. It would be foolish to argue that dry food is better than natural food. Although many, including veterinarians, argue that it is dry food that is much better than natural. They say it is balanced in all the necessary substances, but there is something missing in natural feed. I will help you figure it out. **First.** As they say, let's dot the "I". A balanced natural food is certainly better than any good dry food. This is an axiom. But this only applies to high-quality balanced feeding of the cat with natural food. In terms of its composition, it should be feeding with such food, which in its composition is very similar to the prey that a cat catches in the wild. Daily feeding of cats with food waste— all kinds of chicken heads and legs— is far from what can be called natural feeding. But it is better to feed this way than to feed bad dry food. There will still be fewer problems from chicken heads and legs than from poor dry food. **Second.** I am neither an opponent nor a defender of dry food. We humans also eat dehydrated foods very often. Well, for example, the same muesli. Is it good? Yes, how to say. If you have gone somewhere— on a business trip or on vacation— and you have no other choice but to use all these dry concentrates, then this is one situation. If you eat like that all the time, then this is already bad. And if you also believe in advertising that muesli is always the best choice for your body, then this is generally awful. Well, dry food cannot be better than natural food. Sorry, for people this is called food. Although the essence is the same. That is, it turns out that all these dried products in certain situations can sometimes be consumed if there is nowhere to go. This is about the person. Now let's move on from humans to cats, to the peculiarities of their digestion and how dry food affects the health of a cat. **First.** Cats are by nature obligate predators. That is, they need meat— meat and only meat— for a full life. Cats cannot live without meat, that is, without protein. Moreover, cats need animal protein. Cats digest protein obtained from plants poorly. It is incomplete for them. Rather, plant-derived protein leads to numerous health problems in cats in the long term. And there is a lot of evidence for this. As for dry food, they just contain a lot of plant protein. Moreover, the cheaper the feed, the more vegetable protein it contains. It is a protein obtained from soybeans, corn, and other plants. Substitution of animal protein for plant protein in dry feed is what manufacturers of cheap feed make money on. **Second.** Now they have learned to obtain protein from all kinds of food waste by hydrolysis— all kinds of ligaments, ears, eyes, tendons, even from horns and hooves. Yes, that will also count as protein. On the one hand, this protein is obtained from raw materials of animal origin. On the other hand, it's still not the protein your cat needs. Cats need high-quality complete protein that is balanced in all amino acids. In principle, almost all meat that is eaten by humans will suit your cat as well. Although not absolutely everything. For example, you cannot give your cat old beef. Old raw beef is unusual food for cats; in the wild, it cannot eat old beef. Boiled old beef can be given, but raw meat will still be preferable. Raw meat contains a lot of taurine. With a lack of taurine, cats have major health problems— these are heart problems and vision problems. The best protein for cats is the protein that can potentially be contained in its prey. Vegetable protein has a very low biological value for cats. But, alas, it is found in large quantities in all dry food. Since vegetable proteins are much cheaper than meat proteins, this means that you can get much more profit from them. **Third.** As I said, cats are meat-eating animals; they practically do not need carbohydrates. In the cat's diet, carbohydrates should be 3-5%. And look how many of them are in many dry foods. These are just horrible numbers. There may be up to 50% of them there. In humans, carbohydrates are broken down by enzymes in the saliva and pancreas. So, cats in their saliva do not have an amylase enzyme at all, which would break down carbohydrates. That is, in a cat, when digesting carbohydrates, the entire load falls on the pancreas. If so, then it is clear that the large amount of carbohydrates in dry food destroys the balance of sugar and insulin in the blood of cats and ultimately leads to the development of diabetes. This is a very big minus of many dry foods. **Fourth.** This is not in favor of dry food. This is what cats don't like— to drink water. They have a reduced feeling of thirst. They get the necessary liquid from meat, which is almost 80% water. Cats need plenty of water for their kidneys to function properly. And when cats sit only on dry food, it leads to chronic dehydration, which ultimately leads to chronic renal failure, kidney stones, and bladder stones. And what is interesting? It seems that the cat is eating dry food and consuming a lot of water— even more than if the cat eats canned food. But it only seems so. It has been established that a cat that eats canned food consumes in total twice as much water as a cat that sits on dry food. Therefore, canned food, even worse in quality, will be a better choice than dry food. In cats that eat canned food, diuresis is significantly higher than in cats that sit on dry food. Moreover, it is much higher— almost twice. This is very good for flushing the kidneys. Therefore, canned food more closely matches the natural diet of cats and is better suited to meet the cat's water requirements. Every living creature's urinary tract system needs a flow of water to maintain optimal health. For cats, this means that canned food is more preferable for them than dry food. Canned food can be thought of as flushing the cat's bladder several times a day. Based on this, we can say that **natural feeding** for cats is certainly the best choice, if it is possible to provide it. As for dry food and canned food, canned food is definitely better than dry food. They provide a more complete supply of water to the cat's body. If you do not have the opportunity to provide your cat with full-fledged natural feeding, then be sure to monitor the composition of the dry food. It should contain a minimum of plant proteins and a minimum of carbohydrates. I mentioned this above. And if you stopped your choice on dry food, then be sure to pay attention to these indicators. Dry food must be of good quality. Now they are already making such feeds. The quality of the feed improves over time. Knowledge about cat nutrition is growing, and technologies are emerging that allow the production of such foods. It is clear that feeding with dry food will still be inferior to natural feeding, but many will still feed with dry food. First of all, dry food is very convenient. And man is a lazy creature and does not like to put a lot of effort into anything. And secondly, the quality of dry food is constantly growing, and you can choose something worthy from the range of dry food in order to minimize their negative impact on the cat's body. There would be money. Good quality dry food will keep your cat healthy for years to come. Poorly formulated food will save you now, but then you will leave a lot more money at the veterinary clinic. But the health of the cat, alas, will not be returned. I am deliberately not using the word "cheap food." I'm talking about poorly formulated dry food. You can buy bad dry food for a high price, but this does not mean that it will get better from this. When feeding your cat dry food, be sure to keep fresh water available. It is important. The water needs to be changed every day. It will seem to you that the water is fresh, but the cat may not like it for something, and she will not drink it even to the detriment of her health. Well, cats don't like water. Yes, and one more thing— I in no way agitate you to buy expensive food. The purpose of this video is to help cat owners better understand cat feeding. So that after watching this video, you thought and made the choice that suits you best, taking into account the maximum preservation of the health of your cat. And in one of my next videos, I will tell you why many veterinarians advocate only feeding cats with dry food. But it will be later. Until then, that's all. **Health to you and your cats!** Subscribe to our channel and see you soon!
